ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Felix Hernandez didnt get the win. His dominant performance put the Seattle Mariners in position for victory, though. Hernandez struck out a career-high 15 in seven innings before Endy Chavez keyed a five-run ninth with a tiebreaking RBI single, leading the Mariners to a 5-0 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays on Sunday. When asked what was working, Hernandez said "everything." "It was fun to go out there," he said. Rays manager Joe Maddon felt Hernandez was better than his perfect game against Tampa Bay on Aug. 15, 2012. "That changeup was a fastball until the last moment, then it became a changeup," Maddon said. "The man was outstanding." Ten of Hernandezs 12 swinging strikeouts came on changeups. James Jones had a two-run triple for the Mariners, who have won seven of eight. Hernandez had won his previous five starts, which was two away from tying the team record held by Jamie Moyer (2003) and Scott Bankhead (1989), but the Mariners were held scoreless until the ninth by Chris Archer and two relievers. King Felix scattered four hits. He remains winless at Tropicana Field, going 0-2 in four starts. "One of these days," Hernandez said with a smile. After Brad Miller hit a two-out triple and Willie Bloomquist walked against Grant Balfour (0-2), the left-handed hitting Chavez slapped a two-strike single to left for a 1-0 lead. Jones had his triple before Kyle Seager added a two-run double. "After watching that for about the last eight, nine years, its not lucky anymore," Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon said of Chavezs hit. "I think its talent. Ive seen him do it time and time again." Yoervis Medina (3-1) threw a scoreless eighth for the win. Hernandez reached 1,800 career strikeouts when he struck out Evan Longoria to end the third. Hernandez struck out six through three innings, and 11 though five. This was the right-handers 29th double-digit strikeout performance, which moved him past Mark Langston into sole possession of second place on the Mariners career list. Archer gave up five hits over 6 1-3 scoreless innings. He is just 1-1 over his last five starts despite allowing just three runs in 31 innings. "The young man is pretty special," said McClendon about Archer. "Thats what you call a game for the purist." Tampa Bay has lost 12 of 13. The Mariners loaded the bases with one out in the fifth, but failed to score. Archer got a forceout at the plate after making a stumbling grab on Jones comebacker before left fielder Matt Joyce made a one-handed at the wall on Robinson Canos opposite-field drive. Cano extended his road hitting streak to 17 games with a one-out infield single in the eighth. NOTES: Maddon on Balfours status as the ninth-inning man: "Hes our closer as of today. Even if I was going to change anything, I wouldnt tell you guys." ... After Mondays game at Tampa Bay, the Mariners return home Tuesday night to open a three-game series with a terrific pitching matchup. RHP Hisashi Iwakuma (4-2, 2.66 ERA) and Yankees RHP Masahiro Tanaka (9-1, 2.02 ERA), former teammates with Rakuten of Japans Pacific League, are the scheduled starters. "Thats a match up that I would pay to see," McClendon said. "I think it will be a dandy." ... Rays RHP Jeremy Hellickson (elbow) felt fine one day after his first rehab start Saturday with Single-A Charlotte. He expects to be back before the All-Star break. ... Mariners OF Michael Saunders (sore right shoulder) and 1B Justin Smoak (sore left leg) were both out of the lineup for the second straight game. Smoak entered in the ninth as defensive replacement, while Saunders could return in the next few days. ... Seattle LHP Erasmo Ramirez (1-4) is scheduled to go against Rays LHP David Price (4-5) in Mondays series finale. Wil Myers Jersey . Pistorius mindset when he stood on his stumps in a bathroom and pulled the trigger on his 9 mm pistol in the early hours of Feb. 14, 2013 remains the crux of the South African trial that has captured worldwide attention and is about to start its seventh week of globally televised proceedings. It was initially scheduled to run for three weeks. Craig Stammen Jersey . -- Caris LeVert had 14 points and a career-high 11 rebounds for his first career double-double, and No. http://www.padresrookiestore.com/Padres-Christian-Villanueva-Kids-Jersey/ . The teams were scoreless for most of the first two periods before Canada scored three times in a span of less than four minutes. Sarah Potomak opened the scoring on the power play. Tyson Ross Jersey . The young man, never lacking confidence, thought he could be really good. Rollie Fingers Jersey . Jamies number grades given are out of five, with five being the best mark. Steve Mason, Philadelphia (4) - Mason was brilliant all night long with save after big save on Benoit Pouliot, Carl Hagelin and Derick Brassard. The Colorado Rockies may be entertaining offers on a pair of franchise cornerstones. According to FOX Sports Ken Rosenthal, the club is willing to listen to trade offers for shortstop Troy Tulowitzki and outfielder Carlos Gonzalez. The pair represented one of the more formidable one-two offensive punches in the majors at the beginning of the decade, but injuries have slowed both players in recent years. Tulowitzki has been named an All-Star in four of the past five seasons and is still one of the best-hitting shortstops in the game. He posted a career-high .340 average in 2014, but was limited to just 91 games after injuring his hip. The knock on Tulowitzki, though, is not a production concern, its health. The 30-year-old has missed an average of 56 games over the past five seasons, fluctuating from a low of 47 in 2012 to a high of 143 in 2011. Over that span hes hit above .300 four of five years. He had hit 25 home runs or more in four of the past six seasons and 90-plus RBI four times between 2007 and 2011. He is under contract until 2021 on a deal that could pay him up to $129 million over that span, including $20 million in each of the next five seasons. That marks a $4 million increase from his 2014 earnings and is double what the Rockies paid him in 2013. Gonzalez, 29, led the National League in hits in 2010 with 197 and also chipped in a career-high 34 home runs and 117 runs batted-in that season. He signed a seven-year, $80.5 million contract extension in January, 2011 that keeps him under club control until the end of 2017. However, Gonzalez salary rises significantly over the next three seasons, jumping frrom $10.dddddddddddd5 million in 2014 to $16 million and $17 million in 2015 and 2016 respectively. He is owed $20 million in 2017, the final year of the deal. The problem is that his health and production have both declined in recent years. The 145 games Gonzalez played in 2010 still represent a career-high. He played a career-low 70 games in 2014, producing a batting average of just .238 with an OPS of .723 (down more than 200 points from his 2013 mark of .958). He also posted a -0.7 WAR, slipping to the wrong side of the ledger from a 4.8 in 2014 and a 5.9 in 2010. Gonzalez, like Tulowitzki, is coming off major surgery having undergone a procedure on his knee this past season. Speaking about the contracts and health concerns, Rosenthal told the MLB Network that trading the pair poses not only a challenge for the Rockies, but also signifies a major philosophical shift. When you look at those two things together, along with what Colorado would want - there not going to want to simply dump these guys, theyre going to want to make significant trades - Im not sure anything is going to happen anytime soon, Rosenthal said. The significance is, until now, we have heard consistently from that team and from the owner in particular, Dick Monfort; were not trading these guys. Theyre ours. Theyre ours forever. Rosenthal added. This is the first sign of a departure from that philosophy... The first sign that they are at least willing to listen and entertain the idea of trading one or both. And, frankly, well have to see where this goes. Given the demand for offence in todays game, I would be surprised if nothing happens.
